August in Prince William County means one last stretch of festivals before school buses take back the roads. There's a free outdoor movie night in Dumfries this week, the county fair is already underway in Manassas, a brand-new barbecue festival debuts mid-month, Occoquan turns into a full-town fantasy festival complete with a magical tea tasting, and a free concert night keeps things close to home in Woodbridge. If you're willing to drive a little, there's a Greek food festival, an antiques show, a kite-flying afternoon, and a 10th-anniversary international food fest all within an hour. Here's the full lineup.

The fair is in its final week — this is the 77th year for the fairgrounds, which trace back to 1949 and are the largest in Virginia — and the back half of the run is where it earns its reputation: a two-day rodeo, a monster truck show, a tractor pull, a demolition derby, and a color-powder display round out the schedule. Kids can meet the petting zoo residents or hop on a camel or pony ride between events.

A new addition to the county's festival calendar, Hogfest is a first-year barbecue and music event built around smoked meat, local vendors, and a lineup that includes Custer Flock, the Robert Ray Band, and Tiny Hands. There's also a live improvisational painting act set to the music, which is a nice touch if you need a reason to linger past your first plate.

A little farther up Route 15, downtown Leesburg turns into an open-air food hall for the evening: farmers market vendors, food trucks, and local restaurants set up alongside beer, wine, cider, and mead tastings for the 21-and-up crowd. Live entertainment and local artisan exhibits round out the evening.

It's a longer drive out to Winchester, but Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church puts on one of the region's better food festivals: gyros, moussaka, and a full weekend of Greek music and dancing, rain or shine.

Handmade goods, arts and crafts stations for kids, and a sky full of kites make this one an easy family afternoon. It's pet-friendly and runs rain or shine.

Reston Town Center closes out its summer events calendar with a festival built entirely around kids: live music, interactive games, and entertainment throughout the day, alongside the plaza's usual outdoor concerts and pet nights.

This one's celebrating its 10th year at Oronoco Bay Park in Alexandria, with dishes and drinks from around the world, folk performers and dancers, and a full afternoon of artisans and crafters. It's the kind of festival worth building a whole Saturday around.

The county's free outdoor concert series wraps its summer run with the Chocolate Factory Band, plus food trucks and beer and wine for sale. It's not a festival exactly, but it's the kind of easy Friday evening that belongs on this list — bring a chair and make a night of it.

The Manassas brewery's summer tribute series hits a Madonna night the same weekend as Hogfest, so if barbecue and rodeos aren't your speed, there's a craft-beer-and-live-music option a few miles away.

Fun Fanatics' yearly Community Day lands right in Woodbridge this year, with comics, trading cards, collectibles, and video games on hand — a solid pick for anyone whose kids would rather spend the day hunting for Pokémon cards than wandering a food festival.

The Town of Dumfries is screening Jurassic World Rebirth under the stars — bring a chair or blanket. It's a quick turnaround if you're reading this early in the month, but it's the easiest free night out on this whole list.
Vendors from across the country bring furniture, collectibles, and vintage finds to Fredericksburg August 15–16.

If you want to make a full day of it, The Traveling Teahouse runs alongside the festival at Mamie Davis Park (11:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m., ticketed): a curated tea flight paired with local chocolates and treats, each course themed to a different corner of the realm.
