Woodbridge has a new school, and it already has its own mascot legend to tell. More than 600 students walked through the doors of Woodbridge Elementary School this fall, joining classmates from Kilby, Potomac View, and Vaughan Elementary Schools, along with families new to the Woodbridge District, in a brand-new Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) building.
The school celebrated its official opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony this month, drawing students, teachers, staff, families, and community members. Principal Brooke LeVecchi welcomed the crowd and spoke to what it means to build a school community from the ground up, noting the opportunity to bring students from several different schools together under one roof for the first time.
The building itself, designed by Moseley Architects, was built with collaboration in mind. Its mascot, the Phoenix, was chosen to represent growth, resilience, and new beginnings — fitting themes for a school community starting fresh. Students, staff, and families will see those colors around the building in navy blue and orange, the school's official colors.
PWCS Superintendent Dr. LaTanya D. McDade connected the new building to the division's Elevate 2030 Strategic Plan, pointing to the role a modern, well-designed school plays in shaping a positive climate for students. She noted she had already visited the school during its first week and came away impressed by the atmosphere among students and staff.
School Board Chairman At-Large Dr. Babur B. Lateef and Woodbridge District School Board member Loree Y. Williams both spoke to the significance of the moment for local families. Williams, in particular, framed the new building as more than brick and mortar — describing hallways and classrooms designed intentionally to spark curiosity and remind students they belong.
The ceremony had a distinctly local, homegrown feel. Woodbridge music students performed “A Million Dreams,” the Fred M. Lynn Middle School Choir sang the national anthem, and Freedom High School's Air Force JROTC presented the colors — a reminder of how closely the Woodbridge District's schools are woven together, even as a new one joins the family. Following the ribbon-cutting, staff led guests on tours of the new building.
For families in Woodbridge, the opening marks a shift many have been anticipating: a new option in the neighborhood, built to relieve crowding at nearby schools and give this fast-growing corner of Prince William County room to grow alongside it.
