Drivers can expect left-turn restrictions and detours at Prince William Parkway and Minnieville Road to last about a year, Prince William County confirmed this week, giving commuters their clearest picture yet of how long the temporary traffic pattern will remain in place.
The left-turn restrictions, which took effect Sept. 22, are part of ongoing construction of a new grade-separated interchange at the intersection. “The detour effective September 22nd will take approximately 1 year. This includes the left turn restrictions,” Nicole Brown, director of Prince William County's Office of Communications and Engagement, told The Woodbridge Gazette, after checking with the county's Department of Transportation and Capital Construction.
The confirmation follows several days of unofficial estimates circulating on social media, including posts from local Facebook pages and at least one county supervisor's office suggesting the restrictions could last anywhere from about one year to as long as 13 months. The county's on-the-record figure of approximately one year is the most authoritative timeline available to date.
As previously reported, most left-turn movements at the intersection are temporarily restricted while crews continue building the new interchange. Through traffic and all right turns remain open in every direction, and detours route affected drivers along Amethyst Avenue, Quartz Avenue, Elm Farm Road and a temporary detour road built specifically to keep traffic moving during construction.
The project will replace the existing signalized intersection with a Single Point Urban Interchange, or SPUI, carrying Prince William Parkway beneath Minnieville Road. The $81 million project broke ground in May 2026 and is expected to be substantially complete and open to traffic by winter 2028, according to the county.
