The empty storefront at Fortuna Plaza in Dumfries has felt like a gap in the shopping center ever since Shoppers Food Warehouse shuttered its doors last fall. For residents in that stretch of Route 1 and the surrounding neighborhoods, it left a real hole — one of the area's most convenient grocery anchors, gone. Now there's good news: Sprouts Farmers Market has signed on to fill that exact space.
Sprouts confirmed in early March that it has selected the former Shoppers location at Fortuna Plaza — off Dumfries Road, in the same shopping center as Target, Panera Bread, Starbucks, and Five Guys — for its next Virginia store. The opening is planned for 2027, making it the fifth Sprouts location in the state.
"Sprouts is excited to bring our wide selection of fresh, local and better-for-you products to the Dumfries community as we continue to grow in Virginia," Mychael Ramirez, a Sprouts public relations manager, told the Prince William Times.
If you haven't shopped at a Sprouts before, think of it as the midpoint between a conventional grocery store and a Whole Foods — but more affordable than either, and with a layout that puts fresh produce front and center. The chain, headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, built its identity around an open farmers market feel: wide produce displays, bulk bins, a strong selection of vitamins and supplements, and shelves stocked with organic, gluten-free, and plant-based options alongside everyday essentials. Sprouts operates more than 480 stores in 25 states.
What makes Sprouts a particularly good fit for Fortuna Plaza is that it's not trying to be everything to everyone. It fills a distinct niche — health-conscious shoppers, families navigating dietary restrictions, neighbors who want quality produce without the premium markup of a boutique grocer. It also has a genuine track record of community engagement: at its recent Haymarket opening, Sprouts partnered with local and regional farmers and enrolled in the Food Rescue program, donating unsold but perfectly edible groceries to the Capitol Area Food Bank.
The four existing Virginia Sprouts locations — Herndon, Manassas, Leesburg, and Haymarket, the newest of which opened this past January — have all found steady audiences in communities very much like ours. The Manassas store on Sudley Road has been particularly well-received.
For Dumfries residents, and for neighbors who make Fortuna Plaza a regular stop, this is the kind of news that makes a real practical difference. It restores a community grocery anchor to a plaza that already draws foot traffic, and it raises the bar for what a trip to the store can feel like. A well-stocked natural grocer, walkable from a Target and a Starbucks, in a plaza you were probably driving to anyway — that's a quality-of-life upgrade by any measure.
No precise opening date has been confirmed beyond the 2027 target. We'll watch the permits and pass along updates as they come.
