Just over two years after opening its doors in the Woodbridge Shopping Center, CrossFit 271 is still built around the idea it started with: that strength and fitness are for everyone, not just the already fit. This month, the gym is inviting the community to see for itself.
When Kathy Friend found CrossFit, it changed how she thought about her own strength. Even into her late 50s, the training raised the bar on how strong and fit she could be. Just as important to her was the community around it, and what a supportive group can do for people both physically and mentally.
So a few years after her husband, Dan, retired from the military, the couple opened CrossFit 271 in August 2024. The gym sits in the Woodbridge Shopping Center at Route 1 and Occoquan Road, next to Subway, and has been part of the neighborhood ever since.
Coaching, not cheering
CrossFit 271 is built for busy adults who want to become stronger, fitter, and more capable. The gym’s approach favors movement quality and steady progress over quick fixes and doing too much too soon.
Classes combine weightlifting, cardio, and bodyweight movements, with an emphasis on functional exercises that carry over to everyday life. Workouts are scaled to each person, whether they are brand new or experienced athletes.
Friend says the difference from other gyms comes down to personal attention in a fun group setting. “Our coaches coach, not just cheer,” she says, and they coach everyone, not just beginners. Members are accepted for who they are and where they are in their fitness journey.
That mix shows in who walks through the door. Members range from teens to people in their 60s and include military families, retirees, parents of young kids and grown ones, longtime athletes, and complete newbies. “Everyone fits in here,” Friend says.
Friend and her husband, Dan, run the gym together as owners and coaches. Their stated mission is to help every member experience a higher quality of life through fitness and better health.
